You ever made mead before? Neither have we.
A customer of ours bought honey from us two years ago. He recently dropped off a bottle of mead for us.
At the time of this posting we haven't tried it. We are waiting for our adult children to be home with us to share the experience. Can't wait!
In the meantime I have been reading about it. This is what I have learned.
It’s basically just honey wine, and it’s a lot simpler than people think.
You take honey and mix it with water until it’s fully dissolved—that mix is what they call the “must.” Then you add yeast, seal it up with an airlock so it can breathe without letting anything bad in, and just let it sit.
Over the next couple weeks it slowly starts to ferment. The yeast eats up the sugars in the honey and turns it into alcohol. Once it calms down and stops bubbling much, carefully pour it into a clean container and leave the sediments. Then you wait. Let it sit and age for a while. The longer it sits, the smoother it gets.
You bottle it up when it has the taste you desire. That’s about it.
He let this bottle of mead sit for 2 years!
It’s one of those things that doesn’t take much hands-on work—just a bit of patience and good honey.
Anyway, thought you might find it interesting.
